Montage Mountain Resort is just a few miles away from downtown Scranton, a city of almost 77,000 people, so you will find plenty in the way of dining, lodging, entertainment, and cultural events.
The "base" area facilities include a lodge, The Slocum Hollow Bar & Restaurant, cafeteria, guest services and more. The North-facing aspect here helps keep the snow dry and fresh longer. The most advanced skiers and riders will do best to stick to the Phoebe Snow Quad, which serves a trio of double-black diamond trails. Take the combo of Upper and Lower Fast Track, where blue darkens to black, for a long, fast cruise over a mile in length. A triple bisects the middle of this terrain but to reach the highest point you must ride the top-to-bottom Long Haul Triple. The rest of the upper third of Montage Mountain is devoted to intermediate cruising trails and a 3.5 acre freestyle park. All total the green trails make up 35% of Montage Mountain's 140 acres. The latter also serves the 600-foot tubing center. A handful of shorter trails complete this pod, served by two doubles and a surface lift. The three main green trails range in length from 3000 to 3700 feet, which lets beginners feel they've taken a good run down the mountain. The mostly wide-open green slopes start at the summit and run down to the "base" complex. What you see above the lodge is the mellower third of Sno Mountain the blacks and double blacks occupy the lower two-thirds of the mountain.
But when you first arrive this won't be obvious. Fully 20% of the mountain is rated advanced while another 15% is rated expert.
Montage Mountain pleases with a solid 1000 foot vertical drop and a higher percentage of advanced and expert terrain than most other areas in the state.
